Last weekend it was a rare and special morning for Kennedy and me as we ducked out of the house early on Saturday for an offical back to school shopping date. Whew we had fun. I was aprehensive because the last time we went we both were at different stages of life :)...I went in with a specific idea of what I wanted her to have and she of course had a totally different idea and that was only at 5 years old. BUT we simply had the best time, talking, shopping and finding some great finds for a big second grade year. Normally we don't have to do the big back to school shopping because we get things here and there throughout Spring and Summer but this year was different because this girl has GROWN. She gets taller and taller and her legs just keep growing and her poor pants/shorts can't keep up. Can't imagine where the girl gets her height :).
This summer I have really seen Kennedy's growth; not just in her size but in everything else too. She is getting past all that younger stuff, she still is ok with most of it but I can see it, even just a little bit. She doesn't say it, doesn't always act it but I can feel it. I can see her trying to go and I keep pulling back a little. Some out of fear because she is my first born and some out of shear need because of being in 3 & 1 year old mode a lot throughout the day. Sometimes I am sure she thinks she is way cooler than the rest of us because you see she can do things now that seperates her from her brother and sister. Again she rarely says anything, but it's a mom thing, we know these things.
But today I couldn't tell because it would be in a moment that was shared between a mama and her first born, a few sweet moments when I would reach out and grab her hand walking in the mall or she would reach up and grab my hand. And so I just stared...at our hands together. The hands that used to hold because they had to; she needed to to cross a street, to steady herself. But nope, not today! Today she reached out because she wanted to and because I am her mommy. And oh what a proud mommy I am. I thanked God for this moment of her holding my hand at the mall because who knows when she will be too cool for that. In my candy cane and rainbow dream world it is never, but I know the day will come. So for now this moment will be forever etched in my heart and mind of my almost eight year olds hand in my hand and the special day we had getting her ready for yet another year of school.
No shopping date can start without a stop for some coffee (for mom) and apple juice for the girl. A girl needs her energy to shop of course.
